Internet Pornography Addictions And The Christie Brinkley And Peter Cook Child Custody Case
By now everyone has heard about the scandalous details in the Peter Cook, Christie Brinkley divorce and child custody case. But if you haven’t seen the news coverage the short version goes like this. Peter Cook, Christie Brinkly’s husband, reportedly had an Internet porn addiction and was reportedly spending up to 00 a month on Internet porn sites and fetish dating sites called Adult Friend Finder. Mr Cook has admitted to masturbating while in an Internet video camera while another member of this online dating web site watched.
Ms Brinkley was able to obtain the billing records for these Internet dating services and admit them as evidence into her custody case. The judge was able to consider this evidence and ultimately awarded sole custody of the couples two children to Ms Brinlkey.
Being awarded sole custody in a child custody case is considered a huge victory. Especially in cases where there is no evidence of criminal activity, physical or sexual abuse or substance abuse such and drug or alcohol addictions. It would appear that other than an admission by Mr Cook that he had an affair with a very young employee, the only mark used against him was his Internet Porn addiction.
Not everyone involved in custody battles will get the same day in court as Ms Brinkley. The average person simply does not have the money and notoriety to get a fair trial in court. Most people involved in a Family Court custody hearing will get a brief review of their case and a rushed order from a judge filled with errors and inequity. Most people would agree that the Family Court system is flawed and in the end it’s always the children that suffer.
There are cost effective resources that the average person can utilize when involved in a child custody case and they suspect their spouse may have an Internet porn addiction. Actually, opium is much less toxic than alcohol. Just as it is possible to be an "alcoholic" and work and be productive, so it is (or, rather, it used to be) possible to be an opium addict and work and be productive. According to a definitive study published by the American Medical Association in 1929,
Morphine addiction is not characterized by physical deterioration or impairment of physical fitness… there is no real evidence of change in the circulatory, hepatic, renal, or endocrine functions. When it is considered that these subjects had been addicted for at least five years, some of them for as long as twenty years, these negative observations are highly significant.
In a 1928 study, Lawrence Kolb, an Assistant Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, found that 119 persons addicted to opiates through medical practice,
Ninety had good industrial records and only 29 had poor ones… judged by the output of labor and their own statements, none of the normal persons had his efficiency reduced by opium. Twenty-two of them worked regularly while taking opium for twenty-five years or more; one of them, a woman aged 81 and still alert mentally, had taken 3 grains of morphine daily for 65 years. The usual therapeutic dose is one-quarter grain, three to four grains being fatal for the non-addict. She gave birth to and raised six children, and managed her household affairs with more than average efficiency. A widow, aged 66, had taken 17 grains of morphine daily for most of 37 years. She is alert mentally, does physical labor every day, and makes her own living.

Addicted to Gambling
We addictionists divide addiction into substance addictions (alcohol and other mind altering drugs, food, even cigarettes) and process addictions (shopping, gambling, exercise, work, and sex). In and of themselves, none of these substances or processes is "bad". The problem is the addict and what the addict does with the substance or process. The way an addict is affected by anything potentially mind altering is always different from the way a non-addict is affected. The problem is the addict, not the "drug of choice".
Normal people, whoever they are, can use substances and processes appropriately without negative consequences. Addicts will abuse (ab-use) any of the above. Addicts may have a favorite substance or process, or several of each, but most addicts are willing and able to use, overuse, and abuse anything available. Many gambling addicts, for example, use alcohol, a little too much food, and regular gambling, all in the service of changing their feelings. At first none of these look like a problem. As the use, the disease (dis-ease, dis-comfort) continues, the blossoming addict covers more and more feelings with the drugs and processes. He may become a little overweight, not do other things he says he wants to do, not be "present" in his relationships, and spend more and more energy on his "hobby", gambling, along with some drinking and perhaps smoking cigarettes. Look harmless? Hmmm. Maybe not so much. The harm ranges from distancing himself from emotional presence in his own life and relationships, to obsession with finding ways to gamble more. As it becomes increasingly important, gambling eventually dominates his thoughts and feelings. If he stops gambling for a period of time, he may find that he drinks, smokes, and eats more, substituting those substances and temporarily using them instead of gambling to deal with his underlying discomfort. Use of any of these are, for him, in the service of covering or changing feelings, providing a "high", or dealing with emotional and spiritual pain and emptiness. After gambling for a while, the odds usually catch up with him and he looses money. In response, he does not stop gambling, but searches for ways to "do it differently". He is like the alcoholic who changes types of alcohol…switches to beer and wine only, as he believes the vodka caused problems, failing to see that he, not the alcohol, and certainly not the type of alcohol, is the problem. For the alcoholic, it is what he does with alcohol and what it does to him that is the problem. "Wherever he goes, there he is!". Just switching drinks or bars will not help. Bummer! Obsession and compulsion, emptiness and pain, drive addiction. The gambler may change locations or types of gambling but will not stop in response to negative consequences. Compulsive gambling acquires increasing importance and becomes his primary relationship, pushing out much of the rest of his life.
If he decides to "control" his gambling addiction, (normal people don't have to control their use of any substance or process, they can simply take it or leave it), the addict spends inordinate energy to not gamble on a given day, or after a certain number of hours at the casino or computer, or after a certain amount of money spent, or some other external control. Attempting to control an addiction never works for long. The frequency, intensity, and problems associated with gambling will always resurface, it is just a matter of when; or the addict will switch addictions and become a heavier smoker, heavier drinker, bigger overeater, workaholic, all of the above or something else…it is just a matter of time. The addict will use any and all processes and substances to cover feelings, taking him away from being emotionally present and trying to fill a void that cannot be filled in this way.
The non-addict does not abuse or overuse and the substance or process does not take over his life. Repeat after me: "It is the addict, not the substance or process, that is the problem".
Most addicts find that the foundation of a strong recovery is to fill the void with a relationship with a Higher Power; many call this power God. This relationship is free for the asking, the seeking, and the receiving. Try it…nothing to lose but your pain and addiction…and everything to gain, beginning with your self.
To recover, one must stop the addiction, feel the feelings, however painful, deal with them, then heal! It cannot be done alone. Get help!
If you want help for gambling, find a consultant or therapist familiar with recovery from addiction. Gamblers Anonymous is one of the 125 twelve step groups based on Alcoholics Anonymous, the "Gold Standard.&qquot; Locate the closest G.A. meeting or use an open meeting of A.A. or Narcotics Anonymous to begin the process of getting free from addiction.

There has been a debate over the years based on how to define an online gambling addiction. However the Australian government did research and came up with a universal definition keep in mind though it is the only research based definition that did not use diagnostic criteria. Therefore, a gambling addiction is characterized by difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, others, or the community. However a simpler way of stating this definition is any gambling that causes harm to the gambler or someone else in any way. Now keep in mind there are several types of online gambling addiction for instance pathological gambling, however let’s not focus on the problem itself but instead on how to fix the problem.
Most treatments for an online gambling addiction involve counseling, step-based programs, self-help, peer-support or a combination of any one of these. Firstly let’s look at counseling; this is usually done by professionals who are specifically trained to deal with individuals who have an online gambling addiction. There are a couple of these services which are available for free by various organizations however they may vary depending on the country/state you live in so you could check it out. There are also telephone counseling services which provide the same counseling services as if you were to go in personally, again you need to check to see if these services are available in your country/state.
The second type of treatment for an online gambling addiction is step-based programs. A popular step-based program is Gamblers Anonymous, this particular program uses a 12 step program which is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous and it also places an emphasis on peer-support. There are a couple other step-based programs that are also used to treat individuals with an online gambling addiction. The third type of treatment for an online gambling addiction is peer-support. This is a growing treatment because online gambling has advanced over the years – a couple gamblers experienced this problem and were able to access various online peer-support groups to help in their recovery. This method not only provides anonymity it also helps the individuals with the problem to seek treatment with letting their loved ones know. The final type of treatment for an online gambling addiction is self-help. This type has shown promising results for individuals who have problems with online gambling who are truly dedicated to changing their bad habits but of course like everything else in life kicking an addiction is made easier with help. In closing as you can see there are several different types of treatments for an online gambling addiction and remember it’s okay to admit you have a problem and so is seeking help, but it’s not okay to deny it, so get help today.

Question by Leah: Associate degree in Human Social Services?
Hey! I’m looking into beginning college for an Associate degree in Human Social Services, with a focus on Addiction. I understand for most positions I will be required to have a BA, which is fine, but until I reach that mark, what are some positions that are willing to hire me with an Associate Degree?
The jobs would not have to be geared DIRECTLY toward social work/addiction, although it would be nice. I just wanted to see what is out there on the job market for an individual with a general Associates degree. While I finish up college to get my BA, I’d like to know I’ll be able to have some sort of career for the time being. I know some jobs, ex. Retail Manager may require a general 2 year degree. That would be a career I could focus on while finishing school, so to say. Not to say I like retail, but I want closure in knowing I will have a well paying career/job rather than making a measly 10/hr like I do now, with a HS diploma. Any information or other examples would be great!
